Natural Healing for Lyme Disease

Lyme Borreliosis is a rapidly emerging disease with potentially devastating consquences. The complex ingenuity of Lyme spirochetes is challenging modern medicine, surrounding the disease in a cloud of confusion, conflicting information, and anxiety.

Many chronic illnesses can be traced back to an earlier Lyme infection, either one previously undetected or ineffectively treated. The underreporting of the disease and the ability of the spirochetes to evade antibiotics and the immune system makes diagnosis and confirmation of eradication difficult. The Lyme spirochetes prefer the collagenous tissues of the body so they enter the joints, eyes, brain and spinal cord, and the heart. Arthritis, chronic fatigue, central nervous system disorders, and heart problems have all been associated with Lyme infection. Having experienced Lyme Disease myself, I am dearly concerned for my community and its rapid spreading. I am most troubled with the flawed health care system and the misinformation in the public that leads us nowhere and creates hysteria. I wish there to be a common platform to discuss the truth of this disease and the efficacy of treatment utilizing the potent natural remedies that grow all around us. I offer this information and treatment for this growing epidemic to continue the leveling process. In the years that I've been treating those infected, the majority have previously gone through antibiotic therapy with no avail but have recovered with this protocol.

Treatment

I offer a treatment protocol that blends herbal medicines, acupuncture, massage, and dietary recommendations to eradicate the spirochetes, support your body's immune response, and lessen the effects of the disease. The herbal protocol I use is based on Stephen Buhner's book Healing Lyme with whom I have extensively consulted. In conjunction with the herbal protocol, getting regular acupuncture and massage will help with symptomatic relief and strengthening of your immune system. Watercourse Way offers both modalities. If you live farther away, you may find an acupuncturist and massage therapist in your area, and you and I can consult by phone, working to tailor an herbal protocol to target your symptoms and work with your constitution. I can also send monthly supplies of herbs if you wish. If you've been recently bit (within 3-4 weeks), start antibiotics right away and start the herbs in conjunction with them as soon as possible. If the infection has taken hold (usually within 2-12 months, depending on your constitution), I do not recommend taking antibiotics due to their ineffectiveness at this point and the immune system suppression they cause. In most chronic cases, long-term herbal treatment (generally 8-12 months) should be expected.

Lyme Disease Myths & Facts

1. Myth: Lyme Disease is only transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick. In fact, Lyme spirochetes have been found in various species of ticks, other biting insects, and in human bodily fluids.

2. Myth: There must be a bull's eye rash in Lyme Disease. In fact, the bull's eye rash is definite confirmation of infection but only about a third (37%) of those infected will show the erythema migrans (EM) or bull's eye rash.

3. Myth: There are very few people that get infected with Lyme Disease. In fact, there are underestimated figures by the Centers for Disease Control (only 20,000 new infections per year) while researchers at Harvard Medical School estimate closer to 200,000 new infections a year.

4. Myth: Lyme Disease is easily treated with antibiotics. In fact, while antibiotics are helpful to kill the spirochetes in early detection, there are many who do not respond to treatment or will relapse. And as the disease progresses, the organisms are able to evade and hide in areas of the body where antibiotics are ineffective. In addition, if antibiotics are given long term or intravenously it actually weakens the immune response and makes it even more difficult for the body to rid itself of the spirochetes and other pathogens as well.

5. Myth: Laboratory testing is a reliable source to diagnose Lyme infection. In fact, these tests consistently miss spirochete infection and a great number of people are tested false positive, false negative or have cross-reactivity. This is because detection can be difficult in the different stages of the disease and the antibody response can be weak or non-existent. Lab testing can be a helpful adjunct to diagnosing Lyme infection but should be secondary to the individual symptomatic presentation.
